Physically active learning is a teaching approach that incorporates movement and physical activity into the learning process. It has been shown to have numerous benefits for both physical activity levels and academic performance in primary school students.

Here are five reasons why schools might want to consider implementing physically active learning:

  1. Improves academic performance. Studies have shown that physically active learning can lead to improved academic performance, particularly in subjects such as math and reading. This is because movement and exercise have been linked to increased cognitive function and memory retention.
  2. Increases physical activity levels. Physically active learning can help children meet the recommended daily amount of physical activity, which is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and improving mental health.
  3. Enhances social and emotional development. Physical activity can improve social and emotional development by fostering teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. These skills are essential for success in both academic and personal life.
  4. Improves behaviour and attention. Research has shown that incorporating movement and physical activity into the learning process can improve student behaviour and attention in the classroom. This is because physical activity can help reduce restlessness and improve focus.
  5. Provides a fun and engaging learning experience. Physically active learning can help break up the monotony of traditional classroom learning and increase student motivation and interest in the subject matter.
